Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the official beginning of the liturgical period of Lent. Lenten practices vary from tradition to tradition, but in Unity we embrace Lent as a time to focus on our spiritual growth. During this 46-day period, we typically adopt or go deeper into spiritual practices and disciplines such as prayer and meditation, devotional time, or even fasting or retreat. I met with a friend the other day who is going through a lot of personal stuff – grieving, family conflicts, financial challenges and upheaval in their living situation (not to mention all that’s going on in the world). And while they are a person of deep faith, they are also, understandably, struggling with the unanswerable “whys” around all this – including “why” the loving God they know would allow all this to happen…(even as they know God isn’t responsible for any of it).

These are such challenging times. I am finding that it takes practiced (and practicing) mindfulness, daily (sometimes hourly), to keep my attention focused on Truth while also bearing witness to all that is going on around us.
