At times like these, it can be very difficult to know what to say in a minister’s weekly message. So much is happening in our country and it’s devastating and frightening. We are feeling so many emotions—anger, fear, disillusionment, hopelessness, deep sadness and pain. The militarization of one of our largest cities, rioting in the streets, mass deportations, families being destroyed…it’s almost more than one can bear.
And yet…our spiritual foundation urges us to believe that somehow, someway, even when we can’t see it, even when it’s hard for us to believe it—God is there in the midst of all of it. No matter what is happening, God is everywhere present and active and God’s love is always there, in the very center of it. No matter what the outer circumstances look like, we are always one with God, one with each other, and one with all Creation.
This is what gives us the hope I spoke of this past Sunday. Our challenge, as spiritual seekers and as human beings, is to hold onto that Truth and the hope that it gives. Our job is to learn to see the presence of God in the midst of all the mess. And our calling is to be that presence of God to the best of our ability, right here, wherever we are. And we do that by showing up as love, right in our little corner of the world, with our friends and family and neighbors and community. And by having eyes to see the love that is ever present, even in the midst of the seeming chaos.
I challenge each of us this week to see if we can notice where God’s love is showing up, whether in big or small ways. Put on your “God glasses” and begin to notice all the way’s God’s infinite love is making itself known all around you—in the kindness of strangers, in the beauty of nature, in the smiles and hugs of your dear ones. God’s love and goodness and mercy are always there, if only we have eyes to see. Let that Truth give you hope in the midst of sadness and despair. Love always wins.
Hopeful Blessings,
Rev. Michelle
